RCPGC vs OAGS
The 38th match between Royal Cinque Ports Golf Club and the Society took place on Saturday 8th February. The match was started in 1983 by Tony Brewer, the captain of the previous year’s Halford Hewitt losing finalists.
Tony was also a member of RCPGC, as indeed were many of the society.
In its early days the match was a friendly, but very competitive match 36 holes of scratch foursomes. The match is now played off handicap, but regardless, it is still a vitally useful trial for our Halford Hewitt aspirants.
The match is without doubt one of the highlights of the Society calendar and this year was no exception. The morning result was 4-2 to RCPGC. The Society proved itself an after lunch team as we rallied to win that session 3-2. Overall therefore RCPGC won 6-5.
The Society team was;
Duncan Anderson
Hugo Avshu
Jeremy Brewer
Chris Cowan
Roger Kelly
Ruwan Nanayakkara
David Rutnam
Chris Sealey
David Somerville
Jonathan Swinney
Tom Watling
OAs Nick Owen and Richard Smith played for RCPGC.
It was most encouraging that three U30 society members took part. As well as showing considerable golfing promise for the future, it seems that the Society’s ability to consume Kummel will continue unabated!
