When I woke up on Sunday the wind and rain were battering my house. Nick Donald called me up to check if we were mad enough to play in these conditions. I assured him that the weather would improve and, as we turned up at Deal, the rain started to ease, and by the time we started it was just the wind we had to deal with. It was in a different direction to normal, being at least a three club wind from the right up the first. I sent the young talent of Felix and Jonny off top against Cranleigh’s most accomplished pair. They had a slight advantage early on but narrowly lost on the 17th – they certainly had them worried. Off second Hugo and Jamie played their socks off for a half. Nick and Colin twice came back from two down to level but lost the 18th to finish one down and playing solo as the fourth match I managed a convincing win. Sadly it wasn’t quite enough as Cranleigh prevailed 2.5 / 1.5. But a great day was had by all. The picture is of the winning Cranleigh Team with the Cranwich Salver.
